A Clean Slate Punishment shouldn’t last forever

To celebrate Michigan’s Clean Slate Law going into effect, we’re donating $1 for every Limited Edition Creamberry 1/8 jar and 5ct pre-roll pack sold to our partners at National Expungement Week (N.E.W.). N.E.W. is powered by people of color, supported in full solidarity by Cage-Free Repair and brought to the community through a dedicated group of grassroots organizers and advocates including our own Corporate Impact Strategist, Denavvia Mojet.

1What is expungement and why does it matter?

Expungement is the legal process of having criminal convictions sealed or removed from public record so individuals can move forward in life without facing discrimination and stigma. Once you have a criminal record, even for minor offenses, finding a job, getting an education or securing housing can become a lot more difficult.

With cannabis legalization and the disproportionate effects of the War on Drugs on communities of color, expungement is more important than ever. The path to clearing records in Michigan, however, has been a difficult and nearly 95% of eligible people don’t attempt it, even for crimes that would no longer be illegal today.

2What changes with the Clean Slate Law?

Punishment shouldn’t last forever, and people shouldn’t suffer for cannabis offenses while corporations benefit. Michigan’s Clean Slate Law, the first of its kind, makes expungement for eligible convictions automatic after seven years without violations and creates a process for redeeming people with cannabis convictions that are no longer illegal today. Clean Slate will reduce recidivism, support rehabilitation and expand opportunity for countless Michiganders who will finally be given the second chance they deserve.
